66-year-old man discovers he is actually a WOMANafter visit to doctor in Hong Kong

From dailymail *. Doctors told him he suffered from two raregenetic condition *. Went to doctors with swollen stomach that turned out to be ovarian cyst *. Hong Kong Medical Journal said patient willcontinue to live life as amanA Chinese man who went to the doctors with a swollen stomach was told that he is actually a woman. The 66-year-old, who even has a beard, had lived his entire life as a man but was told by doctors in Hong Kong that his enlarged abdomen was caused by an ovarian cyst. Tests revealed the patient suffered two rare genetic disorders that had gone undiagnosed. The man discovered he was a woman after goingto see doctors in Hong Kong suffering a swollen stomach They showed the patient had Turner Syndrome, a genetic condition that affects about one in 2,000 baby girls, and congenital adrenal hyperplasia, which increases male hormones. The Hong Kong Medical Journal, which published the information yesterday, said only six cases of people with both disorders had ever beenreported in medical literature. Turner Syndrome usually results from a problem with the chromosomes and can leave women infertile and shorter than normal. Women with the syndrome aremissing one or part of their second X chromosome. Hong Kong doctors foundthe patient was sufferingfrom two rare genetic conditions. Pictured: Queen Mary Hospital, Pok Fu Lam, Hong Kong BLAME IT ON THE ADRENAL GLAND Congenital adrenal hyperplasia is a group of inherited disorders of the adrenal gland that causes more male sex hormone to be produced. The condition affects one in around 15,000 births and there is no cure. Girls with CAH tend to have normal female reproductive organs but genitals that lookmale. They may also have deeper voices, facial hair and may fail to menstruate. All patients with the conditionare tall as children but shortas adults. Girls with male-looking genitals will usually have surgery between ages 1 month and 3 months to correct the abnormal appearance. Congenital adrenal hyperplasia affects one in around 15,000 births and causes male characteristics toappear early or inappropriately. The patient had grown up an orphan and stopped growing after puberty at the age of 10and was just 4.5ft tall. The patient also had no testes and a 'micro-penis', according to the report. Girls with the disorder have normal female reproductive organs but can suffer with fertility problems. Seven doctors, writing in the medical journal, said the Vietnam-born patient would continue to live as a man and may be treated with testosterone replacement. They said: 'Were it not due to the huge ovarian cyst, his intriguing medical condition might never have been exposed' , according to AFP.

Centre for rape victimsunderway inLagos

Culled from vanguardLAGOS—Respite is on the way for victims of rape and all formsof sexual assault in Nigeria as a Sexual Assault Referral Centre, SARC, will soon take off at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH. The centre, first of its kind in Nigeria, is being set up by the Partnership for Justice, PFJ, supported by Justicefor All Programme, JAP; Department of International Development, DFID, incollaboration with theLagos State Ministry of Health. It is aimed at providing comprehensive and quality services to victims of sexual violence in a compassionate and caring manner, free of charge. Already, 30 doctors and nurses drawn from various government-owned health institutions in the state are undergoing a two-week training workshop facilitated by a forensic expert,Dr. Sarah Redvers, from St. Mary’s Sexual Assault Referral Centre, Manchester, United Kingdom. Managing Partner, FFJ, Mrs. Itoro Eze-Anaba, told Vanguard, that the centre would providefree medical, psycho-social and follow-up support services to rape victims and sexual assault. She said: “The centre is going to provide pregnancy tests, initial medical services like possible HIV tests, which will be done with the consent of the victim and all information will be kept confidential and private.” Eze-Anaba lamented that generally, victims of sexual violence found it difficult to report dueto inability to pay forcost of treatments and lack of awareness. She said: “We are going to install a system that will provide disaggregated data so that we will be able to say how many rape victims there are in Lagos State and how many came from Ikorodu, Yaba, and so on.” etc and among all these areas, what age group of people are more prone as victims or even as perpetrators. What social class or religion. All those aggregation will be provided at the sametime.” She further listed some of the challenges faced by victims to include; lack of specialized attention, cost of treatment and undue delay in receiving medical attention discourages victims from going to government hospitals. She said: “SARC will provide psychosocialand counseling support, assessmentand information on options available, assistance in planning their next steps, follow up casemanagement support as requested.” Some of the free services to be offered by SARC include; medical examination and treatment for illness and injuries caused by assault, counseling to help cope with emotional and psychological effects of rape, help reporting the incidentto police, information on the legal system ifa person wants to take case to court and referral to otheragencies On her part, UK- based Forensic expert, Dr. Sarah Redvers, who has managed victims for over seven years, explained that the training would help the doctors and nurses to work in the centre be able tooffer quality medical support and counseling and forensic documentation of their examinations.

Nigeria to generate 7,000 megawatts of electricity by 2014 – NERC

Culled from vanguard newspaper.Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Dr Sam Amadi, on Monday in Abuja assured Nigerians ofincreased electricity generation from 5,000 to 7,000 megawatts by 2014. Amadi who gave the assurance during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) said the increase was to meet the yearnings of Nigerians. “By our projection, we will get up to 10,000 megawatts byfirst quarter of 2014,but the commission prefers to expect a much lower figure, which is 7,000. “This is because, with what is on ground and the activities which are going on, we would have done well based on the expectations in the market,’’ he said. Amadi also said Nigerians would soonhave access to a variety of renewablesources of power, other than hydro-power generation. “We are going to have solar and otherforms of renewable power sources, because the county is making investmenttowards that. “Currently, there areprivate firms that are licensed for solar. “So, we believe that in the next couple of years, we should have a mixture of power source from solar, gas, hydro, wind and all that,’’ he said.(NAN)

Brazil underpressure to prove can host World Cup

Culled from vanguard newspaper.RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) – When it kicksoff the Confederations Cup 12 days from now, Brazil will have two weeks to convince sceptics that it can honour its pledge to stage a successful World Cup next year. The upcoming tournament, in which eight teams — Spain, Italy, Mexico, Brazil, Uruguay, Japan, Nigeria and Tahiti — will compete from June 15 to 30, is seen as a dress rehearsal for the 2014 World Cup, soccer’s most prestigious event. Some 355,000 Brazilians and foreign tourists are expected for the tournament for whichLatin America’s leading power has struggled to completethe construction or renovation of the sixhost arenas. The work has been plagued by repeated delays caused by strikes, roof collapseand other problems. The latest contretemps occurred last Thursday when a judge ordered the suspension of Sunday’s friendly international betweenBrazil and England atRio’s hallowed Maracana stadium over safety concerns. It took the intervention of Rio state authorities whohad to produce evidence that the iconic arena met safety requirements for the judge to relent and lift the suspension, which was blamed on a “bureaucratic error”. The news was greeted with relief bysoccer world governing body FIFA. “After 30 seconds ofanxiety, I was delighted to receive a statement from the authorities in Rio saying that it was a bureaucratic error and that there is not,in fact, a problem with safety or with the structure,” its secretary general Jerome Valcke said from Mauritius, where he was attending a FIFA Congress. A crowd of 66,000 people eventually watched the match which ended in a 2-2draw to complete the second test for the Maracana, which wasinaugurated on April 27 after a $600-million-dollar 30-month renovation. The friendly served as preparation for the Brazilian nationalsquad ahead of the Confederations Cup, which will be played in six stadiums: Rio’sMaracana, Brasilia’s Mane Garrincha, Recife’s Arena Pernambuco, Fortaleza’s Castelao,Salvador’s Fonte Nova and Belo Horizonte’s Mineirao. “It will be a fantastic tournament, but the operational part will not be 100 percent ready. (…) I want to repeat that such delays cannot be tolerated for the World Cup,” Valcke warned in April. Brazil football great Romario, now a socialist lawmaker, reacting to Thursday’s Maracana incident, chided President Dilma Rousseff for her upbeat assessment of stadium preparations. “She must be ashamed of the nonsense that occurred (Thursday) soon after her comments” that Brazil “will host the best World Cup ever,” he noted. — High prices for Brazilian and foreign visitors – According to a study by the government tourism agency Embratur, Brazilian and foreign tourists expected for the tournament can brace for high hotel prices, on average more expensive thanthose in Paris, London, New York and Barcelona. Domestic flights can also reach exorbitant prices as the country lacks low-cost carriers and two airlines, Tamand Gol, control morethan 76 percent of the home market. Airports, seen by thegovernment as a major challenge, are also congested and temporary terminals will have be set up to deal with the expected surge in air traffic. Also running behind schedule are urban mobility infrastructure projects initally planned for the World Cup. “We chould have done more, but now it is too late,” said Jose Roberto Bernasconi, president of the National Union of Architecture and Engineering, an independent oversight body. Brazil’s cumbersome bureaucracy and the fact that few Brazilians speak English will be additional headachesfor foreign visitors. Meanwhile, Braziliansare under no illusion about the chances oftheir selecao, winnerof five World Cups and three Confederations Cup, but who have performed poorly over the past months and stand just 19th in the current FIFA rankings. And the home fans won’t even be able to use the “caxirola”, Brazil’s percussion answer to South Africa’s plastic vuvuzela horn, as it has been banned during the friendly internationals and the Confederations Cup for security reasons. The decision followedan April 28 incident during which irate fans hurled dozens of caxirolas on the pitch during a match between Bahia and Vitoria

THE HOW THE BRAIN WORKS

All neuroscience is based on a modular brain, each component responsible for certain 'functions,' without explanation of how they cooperate in coordinated responses. This article offers a new theory of neuropsychology—how the brain works, coherently . It provides an accumulation of authoritative evidence that the Reticular Activating System (RAS), including its ‘sentinel,’ the Reticular Formation (RF), with two-way communications with all of the brain and body, is the perfect candidate for the ‘Command and Control System’ in all sentient beings, the de facto manager and coordinator of all brain and body activities. T HE B RAIN - M YStERY OF M ATTER AND M IND U. S. News Books - 1981 The RF, processing100 million internaland environmentalsensory impulses per second, selects‘significant’ stimuli, resolving many biological imbalances ‘silently.’ Others are forwarded to thalamus and midbrain—the locus of RAS and consciousness —thence to the cortex, the ‘hard-drive’ memory of data, sensory and motor neurons, and sensory and motor sequences. RAS extracts nine times more information from cortex to thalamus, providing cognition; and registers relevant cortex memory response sequences in the prefrontal lobes for resolution and implementation via the premotor cortex. The prefrontal cortex is ‘RAM’ workspace, balancing responses until one predominates. RF/RAS monitors and generates responses (or response-impulses) to any disequilibria in 1) any biological/physiological function, 2) in the innate Social-Animal Needs we share with our cousin, the chimpanzee, and 3) in the hundreds of significant, self-adopted beliefs and affections— conscious and subconscious —which constitute the unique ‘Love/Belief System’ wired in each of our brains, between stimlus and cognition . These two sets of programs mingle (one can love SA-Needs for food, sex, socializing, etc), continually generating desiresand fears representing the great majority of RF ‘significant’ stimuli which engross consciousness. We each see, hear, and read ― experience ― the world through our Social-Animal Needs and the unique set of elements, conscious and sbubconscious, of our particular Love/Belief Systems. The Reticular Activating System can be imputed to generate all our emotions, and all our psychopathologies RAS interprets the world differently to each of us , and triggers our responses or response-impulses. Those with unexamined, anarchic Love/Belief Systems are, for the most part, on autopilot—not living, but being lived by the Reticular Activating System, programmed by their Social Animal Needs, and by the conscious and subconscious

new theory on why men love breast

Why do straight men devote so much headspace to those big, bulbous bags of fat drooping from women's chests? Scientists have never satisfactorily explained men's curious breast fixation, but now, a neuroscientist has struck upon an explanation that he says "just makes a lot of sense." Larry Young, a professor of psychiatry at Emory University who studies the neurological basis of complex social behaviors, thinks human evolution has harnessed an ancient neuralcircuit that originally evolvedto strengthen the mother-infant bond during breast-feeding, and now uses this brain circuitry to strengthen the bond between couples aswell. The result? Men, like babies, love breasts . When a woman's nipples are stimulated during breast-feeding, the neurochemical oxytocin, otherwise known as the "love drug," floods her brain, helping to focus her attention and affection on her baby. But research over the past few years hasshown that in humans, this circuitry isn't reserved for exclusive use by infants.Recent studies have found that nipple stimulation enhances sexual arousal in the great majority of women, and it activates the same brain areas as vaginal and clitoral stimulation. When a sexual partner touches, massages or nibbles a woman's breasts, Young said, this triggers the release of oxytocin in the woman's brain, just like whathappens when a baby nurses. But in this context, the oxytocin focuses the woman's attention on her sexual partner, strengthening her desire to bond with this person. In other words, men can make themselves more desirable by stimulating a woman's breasts during foreplay and sex. Evolution has, in a sense, made men want to do this.

Today's word of wisdom

When you have potential, you don't have to mess up before you go up. In the end, it's not the years in your life that count....it's the life in your years.
